WSB Helps Obtain Large Grant for Small Cities Development (Rochester – May 12, 2016)
The City of Albert Lea was notified by the Department of Employment and Economic Development that it has been awarded a $526,700 grant for redevelopment of downtown properties. The funds are dependent on the state’s expected award from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Together with the City, WSB staff met with property owners to explain the program and options and collected and compiled feedback that detailed their plans for projects. After determining the amount needed, WSB staff helped the City prepare the grant request. Twenty-eight property owners submitted initial letters of interest, but each will have to submit formal applications for funding approval. WSB staff continues to assist the City with the next steps in finalizing the grant agreement and administering the program.

Based on information collected from surveys and the amount granted, it is anticipated that the funds will allow for numerous residential and commercial projects in buildings within Albert Lea’s historic downtown.

As City Planner for the City, WSB has assisted the City with its goals of increasing residential options including expanded “live/work” amenities that strengthen the economy and livability of the downtown and the adjacent residential neighborhoods. WSB staff members continue to provide expertise to the City Heritage Preservation Commission and help broaden the role of the commission to include preservation advocacy, public education, and the integration of historic rehabilitation into a larger community economic development program.
