Widseth Smith Nolting’s Rochester office relocated from its current space on Bandel Road to the former Home Design Studio building in northwest Rochester on September 10, 2015.

The architectural and engineering firm has helped hundreds of clients through the process of taking their projects from vision to built space, but its most recent client was—Widseth Smith Nolting. “It’s been an eye-opening experience, being in the clients’ seat,” said office director Neil Britton. “A real collaborative effort working alongside our general contractor, subcontractors, suppliers, etc.,” he added.

WSN reported that its staff numbers in its Rochester office have roughly doubled in just over a year, through the addition of new employees as well as the October 2014 merger with Kane and Johnson Architects. WSN purchased the former Home Design Studio building in northwest Rochester to accommodate its current employees, provide ample space for further growth, and offer unused space for lease. “This was a great opportunity that opened up to us at just the right time,” said Britton. “We have nearly twice the staff we had a year ago, and a building that could handle our growth became available.”

Architect Monika Watkins, head of the Rochester architectural team, observed, “It has been exhilarating to be our own client—and instructive. We have fresh insight into our clients’ experiences—the anticipation of the planning process, the joy of selecting materials, the challenge of staying within budget, and the delight of seeing the space reach its full potential.”

Widseth Smith Nolting will be ready for business in its new space at 3777 40th Avenue NW on September 10, 2015. The main telephone number will remain the same—507.292.8743—as will staff members’ direct-dial phone numbers and email addresses.

WSN architect David Kane noted that this move “has offered a coming-full-circle experience” for him. Kane and Johnson Architects designed the Home Design Studio building, which opened in 2008 as a residential interiors studio and showroom. “Now here we are, years later, with the opportunity to bring this gem back to life—not only for ourselves but also for the Rochester business community,” added Kane.

WSN occupies the majority of the building’s 17,000-square-foot second floor with plans to lease the remaining space in the 34,000-square-foot building. WSN’s current Rochester office, by comparison, is 4,500 square feet.

WSN’s project architect Dana Hlebichuk and the rest of the team have worked to redesign the space to meet the firm’s needs, changing the building from retail to office while preserving its distinctive character. He reports the staff is “eager to begin our next chapter in the rebranded WSN Building!”
