Knowing students succeeding in the classroom today creates a better community tomorrow, United Way of Olmsted County is gearing up for Running Start for School, their annual summer collection of backpacks and school supplies for students in need. Thanks to the generous support of the community, over 4,400 students began the 2015 school years with the tools they needed to succeed. United Way is looking for additional collection partners to help even more students in 2016.
“There are over 8,400 students in Olmsted County that could use your help,” United Way President Jerome Ferson said. “When we’re giving out these supplies later this summer, we’re not just giving out pencils and notebooks. We’re giving futures to students who might otherwise be at risk of falling behind or dropping out. We know our community is passionate about our youth succeeding, and we need your help this summer as we collect supplies.”
United Way is seeking businesses and community groups in Olmsted County to actively collect school supplies and encourage their staff, patrons, and members to drop off donated school supplies between June 1 and July 29. UPS has generously offered to deliver collection bins on June 6, 7 or 8 for sites that have registered with United Way by June 1. Collection partners can register by calling (507) 287-2000 or by visiting
www.uwolmsted.org/collectionpartnerregistration.
“We’re looking for organizations to partner with who care about our children succeeding,” Ferson said. “We need their help to ensure children and youth are reaching their potential in school. Our entire community benefits when we live united.”
After meeting with area school districts to determine the need, Running Start for School will be collecting backpacks, glue sticks, 2-pocket folders, markers, notebooks, #2 pencils, pencil pouches, crayons, highlighters, and pens this year.
