NAWIC SE MN Chapter 346 Will Participate in RCTC STEAM Summit

ROCHESTER, MN — The SE MN Chapter #346, of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will be an exhibitor at the RCTC STEAM Summit next week on November 14, 2017. The Chapter won a NAWIC award for their participation in last year’s event.

When deciding to participate in the 2016 Rochester Community and Technical College’s (RCTC) annual STEAM Summit, the women of the SE MN Chapter of the National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) were interested in supporting their local community and the construction industry workforce development efforts. Although an established and popular program in town, 2015 was the first year this NAWIC chapter had been involved.

Having such a positive experience and agreeing with its importance for the future, it was decided to participate again in 2016. A committee was formed, and plans were made to approach the second year with greater strategy and incorporate an educational activity along with chapter information. The committee developed trivia questions about the construction industry; right and wrong answers were given a chance to play jumbo Jenga – with wrong answers being reviewed and discussed before participating in the game. The other part of our strategy last year involved a focus on middle school students. We observed that elementary and high school student’s interests were well addressed, and it was that middle school audience that needed more attention.

"The positive experiences we have had in the last two years and the opportunity we see to continue reaching the young women in our community, exposing them to the trades, motivates us to continue being involved again in 2017.", explains Jessi Oeltjen, chapter president.

Our chapter members are excited to be a part of this great event again in 2017 and looking forward to promoting opportunities available to women in the trades.
