Rochester, MN - CWS, Inc. announced the release of an app developed in partnership with Mayo Clinic that accurately and anonymously analyzes the well-being and multiple dimensions of stress in physicians, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses and other healthcare professionals. The app, named My Well-Being Index, is now available on the iOS and Android OS platforms.

Why it’s Important

Burnout among healthcare professionals is reaching rampant levels for many institutions. A daunting 30 to 65 percent of physicians feel disengaged, overwhelmed or exhausted at the thought of doing their jobs. An average burnout rate of 55 percent looms over specialty health industries like critical care, urology and emergency medicine.

Burnout can result in a toxic work environment and potential mistreatment of patients. These offenses can cost healthcare organizations millions of dollars, but an astounding 85 percent of institutions are doing nothing to address the problem.

History

The Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine created the Program on Physician Well-Being in 2007, and soon realized the problem of burnout within institutions and its implications. Distress and burnout undermine commitment and dedication among healthcare providers, erode professionalism, reduce quality of care and contribute to medical errors.

A team of physician experts from multiple specialties and experts in quality-of-life-research, created My Well-Being Index. CWS developed - and has recently deployed - the app in the Apple and Android stores.

Who Benefits

Since mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability in U.S. working-aged adults, the Well-Being Index app is applicable in many industries. Mayo Clinic concluded, overall, 46 percent of users will consider making a change to promote professional well-being once they receive their individualized feedback from the app.

CWS developer, Neil Bittner explains, “The app makes it easier for physicians, residents, medical students, etc. to access their well-being from their phone. The apps have built-in notifications for when it’s time to reassess.”

How it Works

My Well-Being Index is a 100% anonymous online assessment tool that evaluates multiple dimensions of distress in nine questions. The app allows all types of healthcare professionals and students to accurately assess well-being.

Additionally, it provides resources, allows users to track wellness over time and compare their well-being to peers. From a research standpoint, the tool establishes a more accurate scale of wellness across the industry.
