WILD Atypical Tea: Leadership Styles - Leading a Successful Multigenerational Workplace

Women in Leadership and Development presents Atypical Tea, a four part learning series centralized on a theme.

The 2016 year's theme is Cultivating Leadership. Atypical Tea may be at high tea time, but our tastings and desserts will vary. Space is limited to the first 40 registrants.

“It takes them forever to learn new technology.”  “Why do they need so much attention?”  “They don’t know how to communicate.”  Sound familiar? Generational differences can cause many challenges in the workplace.  However, a multi-generational workplace also brings many opportunities for organizational innovation and growth. The secret is to learn how to harness the strengths of each generation so everyone can work in their most effective way.

During this Atypical Tea session, hear Dr. Mary Davenport, Interim President at Rochester Community and Technical College, share her stories and strategies for successfully leading a multi-generational workplace.  Included in her presentation will be tools related to effective generational communication and flexing your leadership style based on generational need. In addition, there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Dr. Mary Davenport has served Minnesota state higher education for 28 years, most recently appointed the Interim President of Rochester Community and Technical College, with an effective date of July 1, 2016. 
 
Dr. Davenport’s career in higher education began in 1981 with eight years of teaching at the university level at Truman State University, University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Colorado State University. She served the next five years as academic administrator at Hibbing Technical College followed by two years as the Chief Tech Prep Program Manager for the State of Minnesota under the Technical College System. When the systems merged, Dr. Davenport served as the System Director for Educational Grant Programs, which included serving as the chief administrator for Minnesota’s Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act program. She led efforts to deliver the first truly collaborative joint state plan, with positive outcomes bridging secondary and college career and technical education pathways.

During her tenure within MnSCU, she received both state and national recognition for her work in career and technical education, and government relations. Most recently, Dr. Davenport served as the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Riverland Community College (Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna), and previously she served in various capacities at Saint Paul College.
 
Dr. Davenport earned her PhD in occupational and educational studies at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, an Education Specialist degree in guidance and counseling at the University of Wisconsin – Stout, Master of Science degrees in textiles and related art, and family and consumer science education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a Bachelor of Science degree in family and consumer science education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
