Session Theme: More Than a Woman: Navigating through Multiple Barriers

We all know that women face challenges at work based on gender.  But what if – in addition to being a woman – there is something else about you that creates additional barriers to success?  Maybe you face stereotypes based on age, ethnicity, disability, or gender identity.  Join us at Atypical Tea to hear from Betty HutchinsRegina Mustafa and Jessi Wangen who are facing multiple barriers such as these.  Learn what additional challenges they have faced and what advice they would give to others to help them be successful.

Betty Hutchins is currently the Manager for the Mayo Integrated Clinical Systems Project Management Office at Mayo Clinic.  She has an MBA and a Project Management certification.  Betty is the past founder and board president of two Black Data Processing Associate chapters in Chattanooga, TN and Rochester, MN.  She is a current board of director’s member at BDPA, Southern MN and at Elder Network.  She is a past National BDPA, United Way of Olmsted County, Rochester Public Library and Project Management Community of Practice board of directors’ member.  She is a 2011 member of the PMI Leadership Institute Master Class and a 2013 member of Leadership Greater Rochester.  She is a past recipient of the NAACP Youth Service Award, the United Way Spirit of Caring Award and the Mayor's Award and Medal of Honor from the City of Rochester.  She has received the Mayo Clinic Excellence Through Teamwork Award and was named among the first recipients of the Diversity Champion Team Award by the Mayo Clinic Office of Diversity and Inclusion.  She is a published author and enjoys reading and traveling.

Regina Mustafa is originally from Philadelphia and a graduate of Penn State with a bachelor’s in American Studies. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Winona State. Regina formed the interfaith dialogue non-profit organization, Community Interfaith Dialogue on Islam in 2014. Regina serves on several boards and committees including the City of Rochester’s Ethical Practices Board and Olmsted County’s Human Rights Commission. In 2015 Regina was the recipient of the Diversity Award by the Diversity Council of Rochester.  That same year she was also honored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with the Bridge-Builder Award. In 2016 she was honored with the Rising Champion of Justice Award by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. In December of 2016 Regina was the recipient of the Mayor’s Medal of Honor for her interfaith work. Regina is also the mother of two young children.

Jessi Wangen is a finance representative at Mayo Clinic. Prior to a career in healthcare, Jessi worked in sales and spent 5 years as a pastor at a conservative Christian church. In 2015, Jessi came out as transgender, gave up her credentials, and started fresh. When Jessi isn't making silly YouTube videos, she is reading science books, playing video games, hiking, and adventuring. Jessi and her partner Mallory are currently working on supporting Rochester's local transgender support group by co-facilitating and creating new versions of their website and brochure in order to best support Mayo's transgender clinic.
